The carpellate flowers have been interpreted differently.
It is dioecious, i . e . with staminate and carpellate flowers on separate plants.
Carpellate flowers are roughly 3 to 4 mm in diameter, with 7 or 8 tepals.
Ovary 4 or 5 (-8 or more ) carpellate; styles free or rarely connate at base.
The flower has a syncarpous gynoecium ( fused-carpellate ovary ) with 5 carpels and has parietal placentation.
Plants have either bisexual flowers or both staminate ( " male " ) and carpellate ( " female " ) flowers.
Flowers may appear in early March to late May in rotund-ovate, three carpellate subsessile fruits 5 to 8 mm long.
On either side of the solitary carpellate flower there are two branches each with five or six staminate ( " male " ) flowers arranged at 1 3 mm intervals.
They have separate " male " ( staminate ) and " female " ( carpellate ) flowers, mostly on the same plant ( i . e . they are mostly monoecious ).
Structurally, the flowers may be bisexual, consisting of two stamens and an ovary, or may be male ( staminate ), lacking a functional ovary, or female ( carpellate ), lacking functional stamens.
