In 1937, Patek and Taylor, two doctors from Harvard, discovered anti-haemophilic globulin.
It uses a plant-based haemophilic polymer made from polysaccharides that forms a mesh which seals the wound.
Because of its importance in clotting, Factor VIII is also known as anti-haemophilic factor, and deficiencies of Factor VIII cause haemophilia A.
In early 2008, the US Food and Drug Administration ( FDA ) approved anti-haemophilic factor, genetically engineered from the genes of Chinese hamster ovary cells.
Applications using this early discover were limited due to naturally low concentrations of this anti-haemophilic factor in blood and plasma and volume constraints in the circulatory system.
