Apothecia variably grow from large and obvious lecanorine discs, to being immersed in the squamule.
Other lichens with apothecia having margins made of thallus-like tissue are called "'lecanorine " '.
When the exciple has a color similar to colored thallus tissue the apothecium or lichen is called "'lecanorine "', meaning similar to members of the genus " Lecanora ".
In very high elevations, the apothecia may rise as warty ( verrucae ) structure with thallus-like tissue ( ( pseudo-lecanorine ) collaring discs that may be up to 1 mm diameter, with only one per squamule.
