- The superior transverse ligament of the eye ( also known as Whitnall's ligament ) is a transverse ligament in the eye surrounding the levator palpebrae superioris muscle close to its partial implantation into the skin of the upper eyelid.
- Each is strengthened at its posterior and medial part by an accessory ligament, which is attached below to the body of the axis near the base of the odontoid process, and above to the lateral mass of the atlas near the transverse ligament.
- The transverse ligament divides the ring of the atlas into two unequal parts : of these, the posterior and larger serves for the transmission of the medulla spinalis and its membranes and the accessory nerves; the anterior and smaller contains the odontoid process.
- It then descends behind the neck of the scapula, through the great scapular notch and under cover of the inferior transverse ligament, to reach the infraspinatous fossa, where it anastomoses with the scapular circumflex artery and the descending branch of the transverse cervical artery.
- Behind, this layer of the fascia is continuous with the inferior fascia and with the fascia of Colles; in front it is continuous with the fascial sheath of the prostate, and is fused with the inferior fascia to form the transverse ligament of the pelvis.
- The Mongoloid eyelid is characterized by puffiness of the upper eyelid, " superficial expansion of the levator aponeurosis " that are " turned up around this transverse ligament to become the orbital septum ", " low position of the preaponeurotic fat " and narrowness of the palpebral fissure.
- Extensor ossis metatarsi hallucis, a small muscle, sometimes found as a slip from the Extensor hallucis longus, or from the Tibialis anterior, or from the Extensor digitorum longus, or as a distinct muscle; it traverses the same compartment of the transverse ligament with the Extensor hallucis longus.
- The menisci are attached via a variety of ligaments : two meniscotibial ligaments for each meniscus, the meniscofemoral from the lateral meniscus to the femur, the meniscocollateral from the medial meniscus to the medial collateral ligament, and the transverse ligament ( or intermeniscal ) which runs between the two menisci.
- Medially, the middle layer attaches to the tips of the lumbar transverse processes and the transverse ligaments, laterally, it blends with the anterior layer at the lateral border of the quadratus lumborum, and superiorly it attaches to the lower border of the 12th rib and to the lumbocostal ligament and inferiorly, it attaches to the posterior part of the intermediate area of the Iliac crest.
