   पब्लिक स्कूल- लास एंजेल्स टाइम्स के पाल वाटसन ने ओबामा के परिवार से पारिवारिक सम्बन्ध रखने वाले इण्डोनेशियाई परिवार से जाना कि जब वह जकार्ता में रहता था जिन दोनों ही विद्यालयों में वह गया दोनों ही स्थानों पर उसका पंजीकरण मुसलमान के रूप में हुआ। टोरण्टो स्टार के हारून सिद्दीकी ने जकार्ता में उस पब्लिक स्कूल का दौरा किया जहाँ ओबामा गये थे तो उन्हें पता चला कि , “ उनके तीन अध्यापकों ने बताया कि उसका पंजीकरण मुसलमान के रूप में हुआ था”। हालाँकि सिद्दीकी ने सावधान किया कि विद्यालय के पुराने रिकार्ड कीडे खा गये हैं इस कारण लोगों की स्मृतियों पर ही निर्भर रहना होगा। सिद्दीकी ने केवल एक सेवानिवृत्त अध्यापक टीन हाहियारी को बताया कि उन्होंने अपनी स्मृति के आधार पर निश्चित रूप से कहा कि ओबामा का पंजीयन मुसलमान के रूप में हुआ था।
