"' Atrophic gastritis "'( also known as "'Type A or Type B Gastritis "'more specifically ) is a process of chronic inflammation of the stomach mucosa, leading to loss of gastric glandular cells and their eventual replacement by intestinal and fibrous tissues.
The age at which this bacterium is acquired seems to influence the possible pathologic outcome of the infection; people infected with it at an early age are likely to develop more intense inflammation that may be followed by atrophic gastritis with a higher subsequent risk of gastric ulcer, gastric cancer, or both.
