We have said that the rulers of the independent Muslim states in Bengal , the Deccan and Kashmir had brought Hindus and Muslims politically and culturally nearer each other and even the later Sultans of Delhi like Sikandar Lodi and Sher Shah Suri had adopted a more liberal attitude towards the Hindus . But this was an almost unconscious and , therefore , very slow process of adaptation to the needs of the day .
