It is an androgen ester specifically, the 3?-propionate ester of norethandrolone ( 17?-ethyl-19-nortestosterone ).
In contrast to ethyltestosterone, its 19-demethyl variant, norethandrolone, is a potent AAS comparable in anabolic activity to testosterone propionate.
Norethandrolone was introduced in the United States as an AAS in 1965 under the trade name "'Nilevar "'but was withdrawn from the market in the 1980s due to concerns of cholestatic jaundice.
It was developed in the 1950s and, along with the testosterone derivatives ethisterone, norethisterone, normethandrone, and norethandrolone and the progesterone derivative hydroxyprogesterone acetate, was one of the first orally active progestogens to be developed.
