The citrus mealybug looks very similar to the vine mealybug ( " Planococcus ficus " ), and the two species are mainly distinguished by the arrangement of pores and tubular ducts on the tiny body of the female.
As well as the direct damage caused by this species, the hollows caused in affected fruit encourage infestation by other pests including the citrus mealybug, " Planococcus citri " and the two-spotted spider mite, " Tetranychus urticae ".
"Planococcus njalensis " population density is closely correlated with density of ants in the " Crematogaster " genus, which build protective carton tents over the mealy bug colonies . " Crematogaster " populations however are negatively correlated with populations of ants of the " Oecophylla " genus.
