   पोलैंड पर हमले के बाद सोविएत संघ ने अपनी सेना को बाल्टिक देशों (लातविया एस्टोनिया लिथुँनिया ) की तरफ मोड़ दी . नवम्बर 1939 में फिनलैंड पर जब सोविएत संघ ने हमला बोला तो युद्ध जो विंटर वार के नाम से जाना जाता है वो चार महीने चला और फिनलैंड को अपनी थोडी सी जमीन खोने पड़ी और उसने सोविएत संघ के साथ मोस्को शान्ति करार पर हस्ताक्षर किए जिसके तहत उसकी आज़ादी को नही छीना जाएगा पर उस सोविएत संघ के कब्जे वाली फिनलैंड की ज़मीन को छोड़ना पड़ेगा जिसमे फिनलैंड की 12 प्रतिशत जन्शंख्या रहती थी और उसका दूसरा बड़ा शहर य्वोर्ग शामिल था .
