The fruit of the cashew tree is an accessory fruit ( sometimes called a pseudocarp or false fruit ).
The terms " false fruit ", " spurious fruit ", and " pseudocarp " are older terms for accessory fruit that have been criticized as " inapt ", and are not used by some botanists today.
There are two main varieties of the species : the wild variety " Coix lacryma-jobi " var . " lacryma-jobi " has hard-shelled pseudocarps which are very hard, pearly white, oval structures used as beads for making rosaries, necklaces, and other objects; the cultivated variety " Coix lacryma-jobi " var .
