On June 10, the CIC published an apology and retraction : “The Canadian Islamic Congress and Ms. Valiante apologize without reservation and retract remarks in the column that suggest that Dr. Daniel Pipes is a follower of Hitler or that he uses the tactics of Hitler or that he wants to ethnically cleanse America of its Muslim presence.” The CIC also sent funds to cover my legal expenses and made a donation in my honor to a Canadian charity. The CIC's action is, to the best of my knowledge, without precedent.

Halabi wrote back and justified his inaccuracy with a reference to post-modern subjectivity, with its convenient insouciance toward such concepts as truth and falsehood: “This is the way I understood and interpreted your article. When you write an article, you cannot control the way others interprete [ sic ] it.” Such defiant subjectivity undermines the scholarly enterprise.

   सुश्री मालकिन ने एक अच्छे विषय पर विद्वता का प्रदर्शन किया है कि कौन सी बातें उस समय ज्ञात थीं तथा कौन सी अज्ञात . राष्ट्रपति रुजवेल्ट और उनके स्टाफ ने उचित ही किया था .उन्होंने उचित ही निष्कर्ष निकाला है कि युद्ध के समय सरकारों को अपने देश की सुरक्षा नीति बनाते समय राष्ट्रीयता , नस्ल और धार्मिक लगाव से जुड़े विषयों को ध्यान में रखते हुए खतरों के विवरण का आंकड़ा तैयार करना चाहिए . उनके अनुसार ये कदम आक्रामक और तंग करने वाले तो हो सकते हैं लेकिन अपहृत विमान की ज्वालाओं से अपनी ऑफिस की मेज पर बैठे - बैठे भस्म हो जाने की अपेक्षा तो ठीक ही हैं.

Western Islamist organizations until now have relentlessly attacked, successfully extracting apologies from media figures like Paul Harvey and Mortimer Zuckerman, from businesses like Amazon and Nike, from pastors, columnists, and even from state politicians, a top U.S. general, and the president of the United States. Never before have they apologized for having libeled someone. The CIC retraction breaks the Islamists' spell of privilege and their miasma of immunity. It establishes, at least in Canada and at present, that Islamist groups do not have impunity to fabricate lies about their opponents. The rule of law does prevail and it applies even to them. For those who fear the growth of radical Islam, this episode offers encouragement that its forces can be contained and defeated. I hope others will join me in standing up to the new totalitarianism.    कनाडियन इस्लामिक कांग्रेस का यह कदम मेरे स्मरण में अभूतपूर्व है .पश्चिम के इस्लामवादी संगठन अबतक लगातार आक्रमण ही करते रहे हैं तथा मीडिया से जुड़े विभिन्न लोगों जैसे पाल हार्वे , मारटीमर जकरमैन , अमेजन और नाईक जैसे व्यवसायी संगठनों ,पादरियों , स्तंभकारों , राजनेताओं , उच्च श्रेणी के अमेरिका के जेनरल और अमेरिका के राष्ट्रपति तक को माफी मांगने के लिए विवश कर चुके हैं. इससे पहले कभी उन्होंने ( इस्लामवादी ) मान हानि के लिए माफी नहीं मांगी थी. कनाडियन इस्लामिक कांग्रेस द्वारा बयान वापस लेने की घटना इस्लामवादियों के विशेषाधिकार के दंभ और छूट प्राप्त करने की मानसिकता को तोड़ती है. कम से कम कनाडा में यह स्थापित हुआ है कि इस्लामवादियों को अपने विरोधियों के विरुद्ध झूठ बोलने की छूट प्राप्त नहीं है. कानून का राज उनपर भी लागू होता है. जो लोग कट्टरपंथी इस्लाम के विकास को लेकर चिंतित हैं उनके लिए यह उत्साहवर्धक होगा कि कट्टरपंथी इस्लाम को भी रोका जा सकता है और पराजित किया जा सकता है. मुझे आशा है कि इस अधिनायकवाद के विरुद्ध अन्य लोग भी मेरे साथ खड़े होंगे.
