Freshwater shellfishes previously commonly seen in Japan became rare, but they were seen in the Palace, including " Sphaerium japonicum ", a kind Viviparidae and " Radix auricularia ".
The shell is of similar shape to " Sphaerium novaezelandiae " but is smaller as an adult, more inflated, with a deeper hinge-plate, stronger teeth, and the ligament is not visible externally.
The European fingernail clam ( " Sphaerium corneum " ), for example, climbs around on water weeds at the edges of lakes and ponds; this enables the clam to find the best position for filter feeding.
