   अब जिस आड़ी वंशी का वर्णन किया जा रहा है वह एक सिरे पर खुली और दूसरी ओर बंद होती है .

   ऐसी ही शब्दव्युत्पत्ति वंश अर्थात् बांस से निकले अन्य शब्दों की भी है जैसे वंशी , बंसी , बांसुरी , यह चाहे धातु का ही क्यों न बना हो इस वाद्य का नाम यही रहता है जैसे कि शृंग का .
