   यदि हम इस शब्द के इब्रानी और सीरियाई भाषाओं में प्रयोग पर गौर करें जिनमें कुरान से पहले धार्मिक ग्रंथ प्रकट हुए थे , तो हमें यह ज्ञात होगा कि ? तौरेत ? और बाद में आए पैगंबरों के ग्रंथ जिन्हें ? तौरेत ? के समान ही महत्व दिया जाता है ? रब ? शब्द अरबी के ? अल्लाह ? का समानार्थी है , किंतु संबंधकारक रचना में यह शब्द ईश्वर के अतिरिक़्त किसी के लिए इस्तेमाल नहीं किया जा सकता और आप मकान का रब या जायदाद का रब ( जो अरबी में स्वीकार्य है ) नहीं कह सकते .
