1. Articles 5-8 conferred citizenship on ' every person ' who was covered under one of the following categories at the time of the commencement of the Constitution : 1 . domiciled in India and born in India - these formed the bulk of the population of the Union of India ; 2 . domiciled , not born in India but either of whose parents was born in India ; 3 . domiciled , not born in India but ordinarily resident for more than five years ; 4 . resident in India but migrated to Pakistan after 1March 1947 and later returned to India on resettlement permit ; 5 . resident in Pakistan but who migrated to India before 19 July 1948 or who came after that date but had resided in India for more than six months and got registered in the prescribed manner ; 6 . resident outside India but who or either of whose parents or grand parents were born in India .
   अनुच्छेद 5-8 के अंतर्गत ' प्रत्येक उस व्यक्ति ' को नागरिकता प्रदान की गई जो संविधान के प्रारंभ के समय निम्नलिखित में से किसी एक श्रेणी के अंतर्गत आता था : भारत का अधिवासी तथा भारत में जन्मा भारत संघ की अधिकांश जनसंख्या ऐसे व्यक्तियों की थी ; अधिवासी , जो भारत में नहीं जन्मा , किंतु जिसके माता-पिता में से कोई भारत में जन्म था ; अधिवासी , जो भारत मे नहीं जन्मा , किंतु जो पांच वर्ष से अधिक समय तक भारत का सामान्यतया निवासी रहा था ; भारत का निवासी किंतु जो 1 मार्च , 1947 के बाद पाकिस्तान चला गया था और बाद में पुनर्वास अनुज्ञा1 लेकर भारत लौट आया था ; पाकिस्तान का निवासी किंतु जो 19 जुलाई , 1948 से पहले भारत में प्रवास कर गया था अथवा जो उस तारीख के बाद आया था किंतु छह महीने से अधिक समय से भारत में निवास कर रहा था और जिसने विहित ढंग से पंजीकरण करा लिया था ; भारत के बाहर रहने वाला , किंतु जिसके माता-पिता में से कोई या पितामह-पितामही अथवा मातामह-मातामही में से कोई भारत में जन्मा था .
