Dinoflagellates are considered to be protists, with their own division, Dinoflagellata.
However, it has been settled that " Perkinsus " does not belong into the phyla dinoflagellata, but rather into the phylum Perkinsozoa.
This genus has been difficult to classify, being placed in several different taxa in the past ( e . g ., Chytridiomycota, Dinoflagellata ) but it is now known to be an alveolate.
